History of The Medical Center of Plano
Since opening our doors in 1975, The Medical Center of Plano has provided Plano and Collin County with superior health care. We built our reputation on exceptional compassion for our patients, a legacy preserved from our simple beginnings as a small community hospital.
Now, as a world-class medical facility offering the latest in technologies and a comprehensive range of health care services, The Medical Center of Plano continues its growth to further its position as a leader in health care.
The Medical Center of Plano is a full-service, 427-bed acute-care facility with more than 1,300 employees and 900 physicians on staff, representing more than 70 specialties and subspecialties.
Our main campus in the heart of Plano includes the main hospital and medical offices, an outpatient surgery center, a comprehensive cancer treatment center, an emergency trauma center, a radiology/imaging center, a comprehensive cardiovascular program, the Center for Lifestyle Enhancement, and complete women's and children's services - including a high-risk antepartum unit and a neonatal intensive-care unit.

May 2006

We become the first hospital in Collin County to receive the Nurse-Friendly™ hospital designation from the Texas Nurses Association.
July 2006

We earn the Gold Seal of Approval™ for stroke care and Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission. The Medical Center of Plano is the first and only hospital in Collin County to achieve this recognition.
February 2007

We receive the American Nurses Association's Magnet Recognition, the most prestigious designation of excellence in nursing services. The Medical Center of Plano was the first hospital in Collin County to receive this recognition.

We receive the American Stroke Association's Bronze Performance Achievement Award, as a result of implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

Our Critical Care Unit is recognized with the Circle of Excellence Award for Value of Certification from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The Medical Center of Plano was the first hospital in Collin County to earn this award.
August 2007

The Medical Center of Plano becomes the first hospital in Collin County to earn the Level III Trauma Center designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

We receive the American Stroke Association's Silver Performance Achievement Award, as a result of implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

The electroencephalographic (EEG) lab at The Medical Center of Plano receives accreditation from the Laboratory Accreditation Board of the American Board of Accreditation of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET). We were the second neurology lab in Texas to receive this prestigious rating.
August 2008

We are re-designated as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. The Medical Center of Plano is the first and only hospital in Collin County to achieve this recognition.
May 2009

We become the first hospital in Collin County to receive the American Stroke Association's Gold Performance Achievement Award, as a result of implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
October 2009

We are designated by the State of Texas as a Level II Stroke Center. The Medical Center of Plano was the first hospital in Collin County to achieve this recognition.

We partner with Plano Fire Department/Emergency Medical Services to begin hypothermia therapy on cardiac arrest patients in the field. This breakthrough treatment improves the chances of survival without brain damage.

We begin providing comprehensive stroke care through intra-arterial tPA (a clot-busting medication) and cutting-edge, minimally invasive clot retrieval and coiling procedures. The Medical Center of Plano is the first and only hospital in Collin County (and one of just a few in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex) to offer this caliber of care. For ischemic stroke patients, our clot retrieval procedure extends the time window in which brain damage can be minimized or reversed.
